Which Trowel Should You Use According to Tile Size?

A notched trowel is a tool with a serrated edge used to spread and comb tile adhesive evenly across the substrate. Notches come in different sizes, and choosing the right trowel is essential to ensure proper adhesive coverage, stronger bond and long-lasting installations.

So, which trowel should you use according to tile size? As a general rule, the larger the tile format, the larger the trowel notch should be.

Recommended Trowel Sizes by Tile Format

  • Up to 20 x 20 cm → 4,5 x 4,5 mm or 6 x 6 mm notch
  • 30 x 30 cm → 8 x 8 mm notch
  • 45 x 45 cm → 10 x 10 mm notch
  • 60 x 60 cm and larger → 12 x 12 mm notch + back buttering
  • XXL / Slab formats → European/Tiger trowel + back buttering

At XPro Tools, you will find a wide range of trowels with different notch sizes to suit every type of tile installation.

In addition, it is important to follow a few key recommendations to achieve long-lasting professional results:

  • Properly prepare the substrate and ensure the surface is clean, dry and level.
  • Always comb the adhesive in a single direction.
  • Regularly check adhesive coverage by lifting a recently installed tile.
  • Back buttering is recommended when installing large-format tiles.
  • Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Use a tile leveling system to prevent lippage between tiles.
